Large Negoro Lobed Tray (Rinka-bon)
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.Precious objects from the Chinese Song (960–1279) and Yuan dynasties (1271–1368) reached Japan during its Kamakura (1185–1333) and Muromachi periods, accompanying the introduction of new Buddhist schools and teachings, especially those of the Zen sect. This lacquer tray derives its form from such imported Chinese works of art (karamono), specifically ceramics and lacquerware with lobed floral rims. Similar large round trays were used to hold tea bowls and whisks in Zen temple tea gatherings. This tray was among the effects of the monk Kishun and was used at Seigenzan Yōtakuji Zen temple around 1491.
