Study for "Under the Window"

1878
Not on view
Greenaway is known for her distinctive children's book illustrations. This drawing opens a window onto the process she followed to compose images containing figures who wear "old-world costumes." Here, the artist had her model wear a Regency-era coat with a high waist and ruffled collar, short sleeves suited to summer, a straw bonnet and flat slippers. A basket full of eggs over the figure's arm denotes a rural setting, with farm buildings and fields in the background. Greenaway used this drawing to develop two illustrations in Under the Window (1879), a book whose verse she wrote, which launched her national reputation.
