Ismael Smith Spanish
1913
Not on view
In 1910 Smith received a grant from Barcelona City Hall enabling him to live in Paris where took part in the city’s cosmopolitan scene. His drawings appeared in publications such as Journal des Dames and Revue des Élégances Féminines. He also worked as an illustrator for the magazines El Gràfic, La Campana de Gràcia, Mercurio, Papitu, ¡Cu-Cut!, La Ilustració Catalana and Picarol. This print reveals Smith’s graphic style from his time in Paris and his attraction to the work of Aubrey Beardsley which inspired many of his drawings of people from high society. The preparatory drawing is also in the Museum’s collection (65.711.9).
