Verdant Waves Shake the Mountains

Zha Shibiao was one of several Anhui-born painters who sojourned in nearby Nanjing. These interactions led to a cross-pollinating effect: artists like Zha absorbed metropolitan currents from painters like Gong Xian while imparting some of the austere drama of Anhui painting to their Nanjing friends in return. Zha’s extensive travels also brought him to Yangzhou, where he made this work in 1678.
