Mercado de Juchitán

Graciela Iturbide is one of the most influential photographers to emerge from Mexico in the late twentieth century. Working primarily in black and white, she is known for poetic images that blend documentary observation with symbolism and myth. A student of Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Iturbide developed a deeply personal approach to photographing everyday life, particularly in Indigenous and rural communities across Mexico. Her long-term project in the town of Juchitán produced some of her most celebrated images, combining keen observation with a surreal, imaginative sensibility.
