The American artist John Currin is best known for his satirical figure paintings inspired by sources as diverse as Dutch genre painting, Renaissance portraiture, and contemporary pinup magazines. Currin made this preparatory drawing as part of a campaign of sketches for his 2003 canvas Thanksgiving (Tate Modern, London), in which three waifish women styled after Mannerist figures prepare a holiday meal. The small drawing represents an early stage of the picture; in the final painting, the artist shifted the arms of the central figure and changed the objects in the women’s hands.
