NARRATOR: Surrounded by the hunters, the unicorn defends himself well. With his horn he gores a dog, and with both of his hind legs he kicks at a hunter attacking from behind. The enormous energy and vitality of the unicorn, in the face of so many hunters, can only be explained by the invincible nature of the mystical animal. According to legend, only a virgin maiden could subdue this handsome yet restless creature. Despite his classical origin, the unicorn came to symbolize Christ in the Middle Ages: he is unique, pure, and all powerful. In this tapestry particularly, we notice an incomplete Latin phrase on the scabbard hanging from the belt of the hunter at the lower left. Both the inscription, which means “Hail, Queen of the Heavens,” and the fact that the same hunter seems to be announcing a significant event by blowing his horn, suggest to some scholars that we may be looking at the Archangel Gabriel disguised as a hunter, here heralding the imminent arrival of the Virgin Mary. Next, please look at the fragments over the doorway.
