Tureen with phoenixes in landscape

Manufactory Vienna
Factory director Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier period Austrian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 201

The size of this tureen and the high quality of its painted decoration make it as an exceptional example from the manufactory’s middle period. It is painted in the colors and style of Chinese famille verte porcelains, in which green and red predominate; the phoenix and fence motifs derive from Chinese examples. The distinctive handles in the form of turned wood knobs, which are echoed in the shape of the finial, were a Du Paquier invention.
