Soon after designing his first cover for Harper’s Bazar in 1915, Erté received a ten-year contract to work exclusively for the magazine. He ultimately contributed over 240 covers featuring his signature art-deco style illustrations to the fashion glossy between 1915 and 1936. The covers, which combine large swaths of uninterrupted color with minute, whimsical details, presage his numerous stage set designs, such as this example for George White’s Scandals—a string of musical revues set to music composed by George Gershwin.
