Earl bildete den modisch gekleideten Trockengutkaufman Elijah Boardman in seinem Geschäft in New Milford, Connecticut, ab. In einem unkonventionellen Portrait, das seinen Unternehmergeist einfängt, steht der ländliche Ladenbesitzer an seinem fellbedeckten Tresen in seinem ordentlichen Geschäft, wobei die Tür zum Lagerraum offensteht und Blick auf die teuren importierten Stoffe gibt, die auf ihre Inspektion warten.
