Martin Carlin war bekannt für seine eleganten, von Sèvres-Porzellan gekrönten Möbel. Auf der Rückseite der mittleren Porzellantafel des Sekretärs, bemalt von Edmé-François Bouillat, befindet sich der Buchstabe für das Jahr 1776. Die erste Besitzerin des Sekretärs war die Sopranistin Marie-Joséphine Laguerre, die, ermöglicht durch ihre reichen Liebhaber, ein luxuriöses und ausschweifendes Leben führte. Er wurde infolge von Maria Feodorowna erworben, als diese noch Großherzogin von Russland war. Sie besuchte Paris 1782.
