Zaō Gongen ist ein seltenes Beispiel für eine rein japanische Hinzufügung zum buddhistischen Pantheon. Als dieses Bild erschaffen wurde, fanden viele religiöse Praktiken bezüglich Zaōs in abgelegenen Bergtempeln statt. Durch diese Riten versuchten die dort lebenden Asketen, in sich selbst Zaōs überwältigende körperlichen Kräfte wachzurufen.
