Das Walschiff

Turner war siebzig Jahre alt, als er Das Walschiff bei der jährlichen Ausstellung der Royal Academy 1845 erstmals ausstellte. Bewunderer sowie Kritiker des Gemäldes waren sich einig, dass es nicht leicht sei, den zappelnden Wal und die Walboote im mittleren Vordergrund der Komposition auseinanderzuhalten. Turner malte seine Karriere hindurch Meereslandschaften und viele seiner späten Werke, wie dieses hier, heben auf beinahe abstrakte Weise die dramatische Macht des Meeres hervor. Dieses Gemälde sowie drei weitere, im Tate in London, sollen zum Teil von Thomas Beales Buch The Natural History of the Sperm Whale (1839) inspiriert worden sein.
