Die Überfülle an Farben, Linien, Formen und dekorativen Elementen lässt das eigentliche Motiv dieses Bildes fast verschwinden – den geschäftigen Stadtplatz von Rockport, Massachusetts. Die Leinwand ist gefüllt mit Zapfsäulen, Bäumen und Ladenschildern sowie Hinweisen auf die blühende Fischereiindustrie der Gegend in Form von Wasser, nautischen Flaggen, Seilen und einem Fischernetz von der Seine. Unter Verwendung seiner neuen „Farbraum"-Theorie erschuf Davis eine Illusion der Tiefe, indem er bestimmte Farben einander gegenüberstellte und sie gleichzeitig mit der absoluten Eindimensionalität seiner Formen und Farbfelder negierte. Für den Künstler fingen solche Widersprüche die Vitalität, Disjunktion und das Tempo des modernen amerikanischen Lebens zur Jahrhundertmitte ein.
