Sich von der Formalität der Pariser Haute Couture entfernend, entwickelten sich die Moden der 1960er Jahren entlang jugendlicherer Laufbahnen. Teilweise von dem Glauben an die utopischen Möglichkeiten der Technik inspiriert, waren Gernreichs geometrische Designs eine amerikanische Konsequenz des architektonischen Futurismus' von André Courrèges, Pierre Cardin und Paco Rabanne in Paris. Gernreichs Space-Age-Ästhetik ist in der Verwendung von Details sichtbar, wie dem durchsichtigen Vinyl, den Neonfarben und den hohen Stiefeln.
