Spring Semester Internships for High School Students
About the Internship
The Met’s High School Internship Program in Museum Education offers paid opportunities for students who are in grades 10 and 11 or are obtaining their High School Equivalency and who, on the application deadline date, attend a high school or home school in New York City. This program allows students to connect with art, museums, and creative professionals as they develop transferable skills, network, and gain work experience.
This spring, The Met’s High School Internship Program will introduce teens to Museum Education. The internship allows you to connect one-on-one and in small cohorts with museum professionals in a number of related fields, with a central focus on educational programming. The Met is offering internship placements in Teen Programs, Family Programs and the 81st Street Studio, Access Programs, Social Media Content and Editorial, Public Programs and Engagement, Creative Practice, and Community Partnerships.
Any student who:
- is in grade 10 or 11 and attends a high school or home school in New York City;
- can provide working papers and either a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
- have not completed another internship at The Met;
- is available to attend all required sessions of the internship program; and
- has the consent of a parent/guardian to apply for this program.
Connect your interests with art and careers at the Museum. No prior experience or knowledge of art or art history is required—just an enthusiasm for learning about museum careers, teen communities, great works of art, and everything The Met has to offer.
Upon completion of the program, High School Interns receive a $1,100 stipend, commensurate with New York State minimum wage law.
The dates below are mandatory for High School Interns:
- Application Deadline: Friday, October 16, 2026, 6 pm ET
- Interview Notification: By Friday, December 4, 2026
- Accepted Intern and Family Reception: Saturday, January 16, 2027, 1–3 pm (interns must be accompanied by one parent or guardian)
- Bootcamp: Saturday, January 23, 2027, 10 am–5 pm
- Departmental Placement: 40 hours total. Approximately 2 to 4 hours per week from February 9 to May 28. Exact schedule will be arranged based on the availability of the intern and the departmental placement supervisor. (You will provide information about your availability on the application.)
- Teen Fridays: Must attend three of the following Fridays: February 19, March 5, March 19, April 2, April 16, or May 7, 4:30–6:30 pm
- Monthly Check-ins: Saturday, February 27, March 20, and April 17, 1–3:30 pm
- Teens Take The Met!: Friday, May 21, 2027, 4–8 pm
- Final Event and Celebration: Friday, May 28, 2027, 5:30–7:30 pm

The application requires:
- a completed application form
- short essay responses, and
- one letter of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator, or another adult who is not related to you who can write about why you would be a great intern for The Met. Good choices might be your coach or mentor, the leader of an after-school program or activity you participate in, or a supervisor from a previous internship or work experience.
What to Expect After Applying
Once the application deadline passes, an Internship Review Committee comprised of staff from across the Museum will consider your application to move forward in the interview process. Reviewers evaluate applications using the rubric discussed below and recommend the strongest applicants to proceed and participate in an in-person, group interview. Only invited candidates will be asked to attend an interview.

You will be asked to indicate which time and day you are available for an in-person, group interview. We will send a confirmation email with your interview date and additional information.

Teen Fridays
Explore passions, ideas, and new activities every first and third Friday of the month. Teen Fridays at The Met is the place for teens to be creative, have snacks, and meet other teens with similar and different interests.
Teens Take The Met
Spring Semester High School interns come together to work The Met's big teen night in May, when teens drop in for activities across the Museum, including art making, performances, music, and more.
