Struth tomó esta imagen a finales de los años ochenta, en un momento en que sentía que el arte, inmerso en una cultura obsesionada por el consumo y la publicidad, había perdido su razón de ser. Los restauradores es la obra icónica del artista y el punto inicial de una serie muy celebrada de fotografías en color de grandes dimensiones en las que miembros del público contemplan obras de arte en museos, iglesias y otras «catedrales de la cultura». También es una especie de retrato familiar de un grupo de individuos unidos no por la sangre sino por un objetivo en común; al igual que el artista, se consagran al rescate del pasado para atender las necesidades del presente.
