Nel 1916 Strand eseguì una serie di ritratti di strada spontanei con una macchina fotografica portatile dotata di un falso obiettivo applicato di lato, che gli consentiva di puntare la macchina in una direzione mentre in realtà scattava la foto in un’altra direzione. Questa immagine innovativa di una venditrice ambulante fu pubblicata nel 1917 sulla rivista, diretta da Alfred Stieglitz, Camera Work e divenne immediatamente un’icona della nuova fotografia americana, che integrava l’umanesimo della documentazione sociale con le forme fortemente semplificate del Modernismo. Questa grande stampa al platino è la sola stampa d’epoca nota di questa immagine.
