Questa rara stampa di una misteriosa creatura dalle gigantesche dimensioni, seduta ai confini del mondo, è una delle immagini più conturbanti e inquietanti di Goya. Il gigante desolato che si volta, mentre alle sue spalle appare un cielo notturno illuminato soltanto da uno spicchio di luna, suscita in noi simultaneamente compassione e spavento. Con una tecnica simile all’incisione a mezzatinta, Goya ha raschiato delle lumeggiature nel metallo precedentemente reso ruvido con colore rappreso. Ne risulta un’immagine sinistramente cupa, affine alle cosiddette “Pitture nere” che l’artista in età avanzata dipinse sulle pareti della sua dimora nei pressi di Madrid.
