Petrus Christus fu un importante pittore di Bruges negli anni successivi alla morte di Jan van Eyck avvenuta nel 1441. In questo ritratto, che si può ritenere uno dei migliori dipinti dell’artista e la prima tra le sue opere datate, Christus decise di abbandonare lo sfondo piatto e neutro tipico dei ritratti dell’epoca, collocando il soggetto nell’angolo di quella che sembra una stanza. A rafforzare l’effetto di verosimiglianza notiamo la cornice a trompe-l’œil con un davanzale su cui compare un’ iscrizione ed una mosca che vi si è momentaneamente posata.
