Questo trittico, pietra miliare nella storia della pittura paesaggistica europea, fu forse eseguito per una chiesa della Germania meridionale. Patinir ha alterato la normale dimensione delle figure rispetto allo sfondo. Da sinistra a destra, san Giovanni Battista battezza Cristo nel fiume Giordano, san Girolamo al centro e sant’Antonio l’eremita con i mostri che lo presero d’assalto, sono collocati di fronte a un vasto paesaggio dallo splendido panorama, che l’osservatore sembra invitato a percorrere con lo sguardo in una sorta di pellegrinaggio visivo.
