A partire dal 1945, Still visse periodicamente a New York, anche se trascorse gli anni della sua formazione sulla costa occidentale degli Stati Uniti. Nel 1961 si stabilì definitivamente nel Maryland. I dipinti dell’età matura sono caratterizzati da forme amorfe e frastagliate spesso applicate con una spatola. In questo quadro vaste zone di bianco e nero sono punteggiate da macchie di rosso, giallo e blu. Anche se Still ripudiò l’idea di associare un significato alle sue opere astratte, alcuni studiosi hanno proposto che nei suoi quadri vi siano allusioni all’aspro paesaggio dell’America occidentale, mentre altri sostengono che la natura verticale delle sue forme richiami la figura umana in rapporto con l’ ambiente circostante.
