Questa natura morta rappresenta un esempio eccezionale nell’opera di questo artista, i cui famosi paesaggi di magiche città italiane, dipinti tra il 1911 e il 1917, avrebbero influenzato i pittori surrealisti del decennio successivo. Elementi di legno dipinto, tra cui un curvilineo rosa punteggiato, un righello bianco e blu e delle squadre, sono impilati in disordine sopra oggetti che potrebbero essere pietre miliari. Tra questi vari oggetti, ci coglie di sorpresa un occhio enorme rozzamente disegnato su un grande foglio di carta. Il padre di de Chirico era un ingegnere che lavorava per le ferrovie e qualcuno ha proposto che questa struttura, che ricorda un ponteggio ed è dotata di un occhio, potrebbe essere un ritratto astratto del padre.
