John Belter è da tempo considerato uno dei più importanti mobilieri, autore di arredi di raffinata eleganza in stile revival rococò per il mercato di lusso ottocentesco americano. Ottenne fama internazionale grazie ai diversi arredi per salotti da lui fabbricati, per molti dei quali utilizzò palissandro laminato e riccamente intagliato. Fu un prolifico artigiano, infatti nella sua bottega di New York furono fabbricati numerosissimi mobili. I lussuosi sofà da salotto eseguiti da Belter, impreziositi da mazzi di fiori intagliati in modo naturalistico, rappresentano il meglio della sua produzione.
