How to Weave a Basket

Under, over, around, and through. Design a basket inspired by Statue of an Offering Bearer using modern materials.

Fun Fact:
This statue was found in a hidden chamber of an ancient tomb that was thought to have been completely robbed. Ancient Egyptians believed that this figure would bring food to the deceased, magically keeping the person alive forever.

Materials

Recycled cereal boxes
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors
Glue or tape

Instructions

Cut the flaps off one side of the box. Then, cut down the four sides to flatten.

Cut half inch strips on all four sides of the box. Do not cut the bottom flaps.

Ask an adult to help cut and fold open more recycled boxes.

Use a ruler and pencil to make lines lengthwise, each half an inch apart.

Cut on the lines to make strips as long as possible.

Fold ends up, glue or tape the tip of a strip to the inside of the bottom left-handed corner to secure it in place.

Ask an adult for help to weave the strip under the first strip horizontally, then over the second.

Continue with an under over pattern until you have woven to the top of the box.

Fold the top of the strips down and glue or tape inside. Let dry.

Store something special in your new basket!
