聖母子と天使

フィレンツェ出身の彫刻師アントニオ・ロッセリーノは、ミノ・ダ・フィエーゾレとデジデーリオ・ダ・セッティニャーノを含むその時代の最も才能のある大理石彫刻師のひとりでした。この繊細な浮彫り彫刻は、個人の祈祷用に作られた彼の初期の作品です。聖母は装飾の施された王座に座り、その渦巻き形の肘掛が高浮彫りで表されています。聖母子はともになぜか沈んだ表情をしていますが、キリストの将来の受難に思いをはせているのかも知れません。聖母のキリストを守るような左手のしぐさが、特に心を打ちます。聖母子の背景は、渦巻くように舞う天使の羽、横たわる柔らかな雲、装飾のある王座、そして金の装飾部分など、さまざまなモチーフで埋め尽くされています。
