この作品はマサチューセッツ州ハットフィールドのジュリア=アン・フィッチによる、家系図を主題とした刺繍のサンプラーです。中心に描かれている座って本を読む女性は、当時議論の的となっていた女子教育に対するコメントだったことはほぼ間違いありません。中心の楕円を13個の円が囲み、そのほとんどはジュリア=アンの肉親の名前と生没年が記されています。また、下部の円のひとつはジョージ・ワシントンの生涯と当時の死去(1799年)を追悼し、さらにもうひとつにはアメリカ合衆国誕生の日付が入っており、作者の愛国心が示されています。
