カンバーランド 3 世伯爵 ジョージ・クリフォードの甲冑

カンバーランド伯爵の甲冑は、グリニッチのイギリス王室の鍛冶工房で作られた甲冑ガルニチュール(予備・交換部品付き装具)一式のうち保存状態が最もよく、工房の技術と装飾の頂点を極めた作品です。この甲冑は、戦場とトーナメント(武芸競技会)両用として武具師の巨匠、ジェーコブ・ハルダーの指導の下に作られました。重さが約27.2kgあるこの一式は、交換・補強用の部品数点、またシャフロン(馬面)、サドルプレートから成る馬鎧を含む男性用の甲冑です。ジョージ・クリフォードは女王エリザベス1世のお気に入りで、1590年に女王の擁護者に指名されました。装飾にはチューダー朝のバラ、フラダリ、そしてEの文字が背中合せになったエリザベスの紋章が盛り込まれています。
