プロテシスの描かれたクラテル
紀元前1千年紀初頭のギリシャ美術では、墓標碑として、埋葬の場面を描いたクラテル(丈の高い壺)が作られました。壺の上部の中心を成す部分には、棺台の上に置かれた遺体を家族が取り囲み、哀悼者が付き添っている遺体安置の儀式(プロテシス)が描かれています。その下の戦車と歩兵の列は、死者の軍功を称えたものかも知れません。この時代にはすでに過去のものだった砂時計形の盾と戦車を描いたこの場面は、死者の祖先の栄光を思い起こさせるものでもあります。
