この作品の色使いはホイッスラーの絵画《ノクターン》シリーズを連想させ、また前景の枝は、19世紀末から20世紀初頭のパリでブームを巻き起こした日本の浮世絵の構図を連想させますが、主題は完全に現代アメリカ社会の光景です。ニューヨーク市のマディソン・スクエアにそびえ立つ、当時完成したばかりの22階建ての高層ビルは、高すぎて写真に収まりきれていません。当館では、コレクションの珠玉の作品であるスタイケンによる《フラットアイアン・ビル》の異なる印画を3点収蔵しています。それぞれ色調の異なるこれらの作品は、移り変わる夕暮れの光景のようであり、写真という媒体がスケールや色彩、個性、表現力の点で絵画に匹敵するものであることをはっきりと主張しています。
