ニューギニア南西部のアスマット族は、死者を称え、その霊を先祖の世界へ送る手向けとして開く饗宴のために、そびえ立つビス・ポールを作ります。1本の木を上下逆さまにし、根のひとつが羽のように突き出るようにして彫ります。幹の部分の大きな人物像は饗宴によって称える死者を表しています。この作品の下部にあるように、死者を冥界へと送るカヌーが描かれることもあります。
