スイス連邦の13 州の旗手を描いたシリーズの1枚として作られたこの素描は、グラルス州の旗を持つ傭兵を描いたものです。旗は、この地方をキリスト教に改宗させた6世紀のアイルランド人の修道僧、聖フリドリンを表しています。旗の中心に表されているフリドリンはまるで生きているかのようですが、その柔和な表情と対照的な、旗手の勢いのある立ち姿と流行の衣装とのコントラストが目を引きます。自ら傭兵を務めたこともあるウルス・グラフは、型破りな題材を扱うことが多く、それらは勢いのある書道のような彼の描画法とよく釣り合いがとれています。
