オランダの最初の巨匠と評されるルーカス・ファン・レイデンの国際的な評判は、そのほとんどが版画家としての技量に基づいたものでした。この作品は、彼の手によるものとして一般に認められている30枚に満たない素描のうちの1枚であり、近年当館に収蔵されたものです。同様のサイズそして技法で大天使の告知に驚いて見上げる聖母を描いた作品がベルリン国立版画素描館に収蔵されており、この作品はそれを補完するものです。ファン・レイデンはもう一方の作品でも、線やハッチング、クロスハッチングなどの豊かで繊細な模様を、人物の堂々とした立体感と融合させています。
