ジョヴァンニ・ベリーニは、父親のヤコポと兄のジェンティーレとともに、ベニスの著名な芸術一家の出身で、生涯ベニスの画壇で重要な地位にあった画家でした。彼が描いた小型の祈祷用の絵には、初期ルネッサンスの自然主義と美意識を、深い信仰心と融合させた彼の技量が表れています。通常と異なり、聖母の背後にある布がわきへ寄せられ、遠景が見えますが、その光の扱い方と雰囲気から、ジョルジオーネとティツィアーノの作品に先んじるものを感じさせます。風景は、観る者を前景の不毛の地から遠景の豊かな大地へ、つまり死から再生へと導くことを意図した寓意的なものです。
