ベックリンは1880年から1886年の間に、この作品に見られるイメージの絵を5点制作し、これは19世紀末期のドイツで最も愛される題材となりました。この作品はそのうちの2作目です。1880年4月にマリー・ベールナがフィレンツェのアトリエにベックリンを訪ねた際に、イーゼルに掛けられていた描きかけの1作目(バーゼル市立美術館蔵)を見て依頼した作品です。彼女の注文でベックリンは、白い衣装をまとった寡婦が漕ぎ舟に乗り、布に覆われた棺を洞窟の墓が掘られた岩島へ届ける場面を加えました。数年前の注文主の夫の死を表したものです。
