パリスの審判

美術家の家に生まれたルーカス・クラナッハは、ウィッテンベルクのザクセン選帝候の宮廷画家として一声を風靡しました。ミネルバ、ヴィーナス、ジュノーの三美神のうち誰が最も美しいかを決めるパリスの審判を表した場面です。傍らに立つメルクリウスが、誰もが望む金リンゴの賞(ここではガラスの球)を持ち、その上ではキューピッドがヴィーナスに矢を放とうとしています。この神話は、円熟したクラナッハと宮廷の彼の後援者に好まれた主題でした。同じく彼の作である類品が現在バーゼル美術館に所蔵されており、この作品と同じ1528 年頃の作とされています。
