スペインに生まれ、ロ・スパニョレット(スペ インの小男)の愛称を持つリベーラは、当時スペインの総督が支配していたイタリアのナポリで成人期のほとんどを過ごしました。ローマに移り住んだ初期の頃、リベーラはカラヴァッジョの手本に倣い、モデルにポーズを取らせて写生し、絵の中で普通の人々を魅力的な聖人、預言者、古典哲学者に変貌させました。彼の絵の力強さの秘密は、ラファエロの作品から学んだ正統な構図を用いているところにあります。リベーラの最高傑作に数えられるこの後期の作品は、彼の画家としての至高の作品です。美しい静物画、卓越した布地の描写、そして人物の優しい表情が特に印象的です。
