メズタン

メズタンはイタリア喜劇座の定番コメディアンで、パリの舞台になくてはならないキャラクターでした。おせっかい好きで不正直、そして報われない恋に心を痛める役柄でした。この有名な作品はヴァトーの友人、ジャン・デ・ジュリエンヌが所有し、後にロシアの女帝キャサリンのコレクションに収蔵されました。チョークを使って描いた傾いた頭の習作も当館に収蔵されています。この作品の頭部と大きく骨張った手に、ヴァトーの表現力が存分に発揮されています。庭に立っているヴィーナスの像は、メズタンに背を向けています。
