初回から第3回までの印象派展に出展したルノワールは、1879年の第4回への参加を拒み、代わりに毎年行われる伝統絵画を重んじるサロン・ド・パリに戻って《ジョルジュ・シャルパンティエ夫人と子供たち》を展示し、大好評を博しました。著名な出版者ジョルジュ・シャルパンティエに依頼されたこの作品は、夫人のマルガリートがシャルル・フレデリック・ウォルトのデザインによる上品なガウンを着ています。当時の流行に従い、3歳になる息子のポールはまだ髪は切られておらず、左手の愛犬の上に座っている姉のジョルジェットとお揃いの服を着ています。
