この印象深い人物画は、ジェロームが1868年初頭に4ヶ月の中近東遠征からパリに帰還し、画家として頂点を極めていた頃の作品です。彼がレバント地方から持ち帰った織物をアトリエでモデルに着せています。「リーダー不在」という意味のトルコ語の作品のタイトルは、残虐な非正規兵を連想させますが、実際の兵士がこのように優美なチュニックに身を包んでいたとは考えにくいでしょう。繊細な質感の表現で知られるジェロームはこの大作でその力量を存分に発揮し、彼の他のオリエンタリズムの作品には見られない威厳がこの人物に感じられます。
