シーレはその短く凝縮した画家人生において精力的に創作活動を行い、インフルエンザにより28歳で他界するまでに300点の油彩と数千点の水彩や素描を制作しました。そのほとんどは力のこもった人体の描写であり、1910年から1918年までに制作した数多くの自画像では、自身の精神状態を力強く表現しています。1911年制作のこの自画像では、磔刑のキリストを暗示するポーズをとったシーレが、髪の毛を逆立て、狂ったような目つきでこちらを凝視しています。
