この女性像は、その身体的特徴から彼の創造力をかき立てた生涯の伴侶でアメリカ人のイザベル・デュトード・ネーグルをモデルにしたと考えられています。ふたりは1917年に結婚しました。ラシェーズは20世紀初頭のパリで彫刻家としての創作活動を始め、1906年にイザベルを追ってアメリカへ移住し、そこで生涯を終えました。アメリカを代表する人物像の彫刻家として活躍した彼の《立つ女》は、初めて手がけた等身大の彫像でした。ラシェーズにとって、この像のふくよかな胴、平らな背と尻、幅広い豊かな乳房、細い手と先細りの脚は、理想の女性像でした。
