大恐慌という時代を背景とするホッパーの《婦人用のテーブル》は、女性の社会的地位の変化を反映しています。この作品のレジ係とウェイトレスに代表されるように、女性が社会に出て働くようになっただけでなく、女性客を相手にした店舗の出資者となるまでに進歩を遂げました。素描と場面設定の詳細なメモを基に、ホッパーは美しく盛りつけられた食べ物、「サクラ材色に着色した木材」、「タイルの床」、「美人のウェイトレス」、「安物レストランの下品な色彩」を忠実に描いています。明るい照明と、けばけばしいほどの暖かい色調にもかかわらず、作品は必ずしも楽しい光景を描いているとは言えません。客ふたりは互いに話をしていますが、レジ係とウェイトレスはそれぞれの仕事と思いに没頭しています。ホッパーの作品によく見られるような冷徹なリアリズムは、人間の姿やその場所の環境のいずれを表す場合にも、常に孤立感と疎外感がつきまといます。
