1921年、エルンストはケルンで詩人のポール・エリュアールとそのロシア人の妻ガラに出会いました。エルンストとエリュアールはその後生涯の友となりましたが、彼はガラとすぐさま恋愛関係に陥りました。1922年にパリへ移住した彼は、1924 年までエリュアール夫妻宅に住み込みました。その頃までに彼はシュルレアリスムの創始者のひとりとして活躍していました。ガラとの別れが訪れた頃、エルンストはロシア人の妖婦ガラの瞳を思わせるこの作品を制作しましたが、これはマン・レイの写真を模写したものです。彼女の頭の上部は壁に貼ったポスターのように前へめくれています。
