챔피언 싱글 스컬(싱글 스컬을 탄 맥스 슈미트)
1870년도에 유럽 유학을 마치고 필라델피아로 돌아온 에이킨스는 스컬링 그림 시리즈를 시작하였습니다. 이것은 그 시리즈의 첫 주요 작품으로서 그때까지 그의 가장 성공적인 회화로 꼽힙니다. 1870년 10월에 스쿨킬 강에서 있었던 중요한 경기에서 변호사이자 기술 있는 아마추어 조수(漕手)였던 맥스 슈미트의 승리를 기념하는 것으로 추정됩니다. 열렬한 조수였던 에이킨스는 중간 거리에서 스컬을 탄 모습을 보였습니다. 에이킨스는 그의 주요 파리 토박이 교사인 장 레옹 제롬이 지지했던 학문 원칙에 따라 회화를 구성하였습니다.
