겨울 풍경
보스턴에서 화가로 교육받은 쉴리는 1906년 앨프리드 스티글리츠가 중심이 된 예술가 그룹인 사진 분리파에 참여하였습니다. 1908년 스티글리츠의 갤러리 291에서 열린 자신의 두 번째 개인전을 위해 뉴욕을 방문한 쉴리는처음으로 동료 작가가 제작한 원본 사진을 보게 되었습니다. 얼어붙은 연못에 내린 눈을 주제로 한 이 습작은 그가 특히 감명을 받았던 에드워드 스타이컨 사진의 영향을 보여주는 것 같습니다. 극도로 절제된 색조와 아르 누보 양식의 곡선과 호응하는 분명한 윤곽선은 동시대의 가장 추상적인 사진 중 하나였습니다.
