메트로폴리탄 박물관은 판화의 대가 알브레히트 뒤러의 판화를 500점 이상 소장하고 있습니다. 그의 가장 불가사의한 판화 중 한 점인멜랑콜리아 I 은 작가의 정신세계를 묘사하며 나아가 뒤러 자신의 정신적 자화상이라고 할 수 있습니다. 중세 철학에서 개인은 네 가지 기질에 의해 지배되며 그 중 우울한 기질은 가장 바람직하지 않으며 정신이상 가능성이 가장 높다고 간주되었습니다. 그러나 르네상스 시대에는 우울한 기질을 또한 창조적인 천재성과 결부시켰습니다. 이 판화에서 우울을 의인화한 날개 달린 인물은 윤척을 들고 있으며 그 외 그를 에워싸고 있는 도구들은 예술 창작의 기본인 7자유학과 중 한 과목인 기하학과 관련됩니다.
