카스파르 다비트 프리드리히는 1807년 회화를 시작하기 전 그 당시 제작된 풍경화 소묘 중 가장 매력적인 작품을 그렸습니다.1805– 1806년경 제작된 이 대형 소묘는 화가의 출생지에서 가까운 발트해 뤼겐 섬에서 그린 스케치에 기초하여 제작한 것입니다. 이 소박한 섬은 프리드리히의 걸작품에 영감을 주었으며 작품을 통해 그는 자연에 대한 세밀한 관찰과 당시 유행하던 낭만주의를 융합하였습니다. 광활한 자연을 응시하는 고독한 인물상은 그의 작품에 계속 등장하는 주제가 됩니다.
