이 시선을 사로잡는 그림은 제롬이1 868년 초 12주 동안 근동지역으로 탐험을 떠났다가 파리로 돌아온 뒤 그린 것입니다. 자신의 작업실에서 모델에게 지중해 동부 연안 지역인 레반트에서 구해온 직물로 옷을 입혀 제작한 이 작품은 그의 절정기 작품에 해당합니다. 이 그림에 제롬이 붙인 터키 식 제목 바쉬보주크는 “지도자가 없는”이라는 뜻으로, 약탈을 위해 싸우는 사납고 무법적인 무보수 병사를 재현한 것입니다. 그러나 이 남자가 이런 고급 실크 옷을 입고 전장을 향해 돌격하는 모습은 상상하기 어렵습니다. 아주 정교하게 직물을 묘사하는 것으로 유명한 제롬은 이 역작에서도 그 같은 노력을 아끼지 않았고, 그의 다른 동양적 판타지에서 볼 수 없는 특별한 기품을 부여하였습니다.
