리멘슈나이더는 중세 후기 독일 남부에서 활동했던 가장 뛰어난 보리수나무 조각가 중 한 명이었습니다. 그는 제단용 대형 조각품을 채색하지 않고 이 조각상의 눈처럼 검은색으로 세부 몇 군데를 검게 물들인 후 투명 유약으로 표면을 마무리하기도 하였습니다. 이 작품의 모델이 된 주교에 대해서는 알려진 바 없지만 그의 앉은 자세는 성 어거스틴이나 성 암브로시우스임을 암시하므로 기독교 초기 4인의 “교부” 제단 조각의 일부였을 것으로 추정합니다. 연로한 얼굴의 섬세한 묘사는 이 시기 독일 미술의 특징인 심리적 깊이와 종교적 열정을 나타냅니다.
